Introduction to Upper Limb Therapy

About the course

Upper Limb Therapy is a course for rehabilitation specialists involved in conservative treatment of hand diseases and injuries from the distal phalanx to the lower angle of the scapula. The course is based on the generalization of theoretical knowledge and existing practical theories and concepts. The
training will cover the following topics: upper limb anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, neurology, connective tissue concepts, kinesio taping, physical therapy, exercise therapy, working with scars, psychology, and we will also analyze protocols for the most common cases.

As a result of the course, participants will gain knowledge and skills about the most common injuries and illnesses, as well as possible methods of conservative treatment of specific problems, from the point of view of a functional specialist.

Two-day training program.

The structure of the course is divided into 8 blocks:

Block 1. Theory.
Let's consider protocols for the most common upper limb problems: carpal tunnel syndrome, superior carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's disease, Guyon's canal syndrome, functional instability of the wrist, medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow), lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), fractures, edema, postoperative recovery, work with scars, and others.

Block 2. Practice. Kinesio taping. Decompression, stabilization and lymphatic drainage techniques.

  1. Carpal tunnel decompression

  2. Thumb stabilization

  3. Extensor pollicis longus

  4. Stabilization of the dorsal metacarpophalangeal joint

  5. Interphalangeal joint stabilization

  6. Elbow joint stabilization

  7. Rigid stabilization of the elbow joint

  8. Lateral epicondylitis

  9. Palmaris longus muscle

  10. Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ)

  11. Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus and Deltoid Muscles "Frozen Shoulder Syndrome"

  12. Rigid stabilization of the shoulder joint

  13. Sports stabilization of the shoulder joint

Block 3. Practice. Instrumental Mobilization of Soft Tissues. Techniques for working with blades, cans and floss.

  1. Blades. Trigger Technique

  2. Blades. "Soft" mobilization equipment

  3. Blades. Scar Technique

  4. Banks. Drainage equipment.

  5. Banks. Mobilization equipment.

  6. Flossing. Mobilization technique.

Block 4. Practice. Mechanotherapy . We will learn how to work with a functional board (the basis will be the “Functional Board – manufactured by NordBlade”).

1. Completion of functional board sets. Types of boards. Differences, disadvantages and advantages.
2. Preparation for work. Nuances of use.
3. Practice. We will work out the basic exercises with the participants of the course.

(we will practice practical skills on
NordBoard Home Edition )

Block 5. Practice. Manual techniques.

  • FDM therapy.

  • Joint manipulations.

  • Drainage techniques for lymphedema. Working with patients after removal of lymph nodes.

Block 6. Practice. Exercise therapy programs. Universal programs for developing the hand

  • PROM/AROM – therapeutic exercise (passive and active)

  • Bimanual exercise complexes

  • Auxiliary means (plasticine, silicone, balls, rubber bands, sand)

Block 7. Practice. Physical therapy. We will examine the main tools of physical therapy when working with the upper limbs.

  • Myostimulation.

  • Percussion therapy.

  • Vacuum therapy.

Block 8. Theory. Let's consider protocols for less common upper limb problems, as well as protocols that do not require the help of a rehabilitation specialist (a surgeon or other specialist is required).

What the specialist will learn at the course:

  • Let's look at the anatomy and biomechanics of the hand.

  • We will analyze in detail the most common wrist and hand problems.

  • Let's consider the main methods of solving problems (theories, concepts).

  • Let's look at the main tools that can help us solve the patient's problem (tapes, blades, cups, floss/coban bandages, percussion, manual therapy, physical therapy, mechanotherapy).

  • Let's look at the protocols and classify the problems (which can be solved manually and with the help of physiotherapy, and which ones require a visit to a surgeon).

The course is intended for : rehabilitation specialists, exercise therapy instructors, massage therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, ergonomists.
